Thermal Insulation and Window Energy Ratings. Heat loss is normally measured by the thermal transmittance or U-value, usually expressed in W/m 2 K. In its most basic terms, the lower the U-value, the greater the thermal insulation, however, the amount of free heat energy from the sun, the solar gain or g-value can also have a big impact.

Pilkington energiKare™ is the name given to our range of double and triple glazing used to improve the thermal efficiency of homes. It reduces the amount of heat lost through your windows and can also allow more heat energy from the sun in through the glass.

Thermal insulation is typically provided by double-glazing units containing one pane of low-e glass, with an inert gas such as argon (which has a much lower thermal conductivity than air), in the cavity. It is possible to achieve even higher levels of thermal insulation by specifying double glazing with a low-e coating on both surfaces 2 and 4.
